memories from a utopia
oil on canvas
240 x 100 cm
Memories of a Utopia is about a utopian city. Yet this city is not unreal. It consists of public buildings (schools, university, home for neglected children, kindergarten, etc.) which were donated from wealthy (and not too wealthy) Bulgarians in 19th and 20th centuries. These donations were so large-scale that, if combined, they could create an entire city. Painting in its utopian function could do that.
The work was presented as part of the exhibition So Close, So Far Away in the National Palace of Culture, Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2016.
